Bainbridge Modern Retreat

The client desired a contemporary and modern outdoor space. Right Angles were the name of the game. The goal was to create a tranquil modern retreat for relaxation and entertainment in the backyard and a stunning planted landscape in the front yard. We took an old, mossy, overgrown, backyard and brought it into the next century. This project features Belgard Artforms Modular Panel system, Belgard Melville Curb, Castohn steppers, Belgard Landing Treads, synthetic turf, low voltage landscape lighting, and plants.

Before

During

This project required lots of grading and prepwork to get started. We had to totally reshape and grade what used to be lawn to make room for pavers, landing treads, beds, and turf. In total we hauled out close to 20 yards of dirt, trash, organics, and concrete to make room for all the new features. Luckily for us, the dirt was easy to dig and move with the help of our excavator and mini skid steers. Bainbridge Island usually has pretty good soil to dig in, there were however lots of roots that needed to be dealt with during the excavation stage. After the excavation, materials started flowing, we brought in 25 yards of soil just in the back yard and another 20 yards for the front yard and close to 15 yards of gravel for our base material for the hardscapes.

Challenges

  • Uneven Terrain: The backyard required lots of grading and prepwork before any installation of materials could begin
  • Roots: There were tons of roots still in the ground after grading. This required extra time going around and individually cutting them out of our landscape.
  • Weight of Steppers: The Castohn steppers weigh close to 90 pounds each. We installed 104 of them between the back yard, the front door entrance, and the front yard path. The weight required 2 guys to set each one, not because Brookside Landscape and Design employees are strong, but to get the proper alignment and spacing, it required them to be set with two guys.

After

We will let the after photos speak for themselves. This Bainbridge Island Retreat really did a full 180. We installed a lot of new products for this job. The raised bed in the backyard is one of Belgard’s newest products. The ArtForms System. Brookside was one the first companies on the Kitsap Peninsula to install this product. It is a modular panel system allowing you to create anything from raised beds, outdoor kitchens, to benches. We used Belgard Landing treads for our stairs. For our walkways we installed Castohn Olympic Steppers. These steppers are 4’x12” in dimension and weigh close to 90 pounds each. We used black Mexican Pebbles between the gaps. All the lights are ProTrade LED Path lights and uplights. We used Rymar Durablade Synthetic turf infilled with Zeofill turf infill which is pet friendly. Around the turf we used Belgard Melville Curb to give a sleek modern aproach to planting bed edging to help keep the bark off of the turf. In the front yard, we planted over 50 perennials, grasses, and trees from Valley Nursery in Poulsbo, WA. We used Columbia Granite boulders to give the landscape some beautiful natural accents.
