From Useless to Used Daily

This family had built this house in an up and coming neighborhood in Silverdale, WA. A place where their kids could grow up and play with the neighbors, but the backyard that was left by the builder was ugly, unusable, and rains caused it to become muddy and gross. They wanted to have a space that they could spend time as a family, have campfires, play in the grass, and have it just look better than a patchy muddy hill.

Before

The project began with a totally blank canvas. A muddy and steep slope. So what do you do? Where do you begin? Well on paper. We drew out a design that included a retaining wall to support the hillside so that we could build a large patio with a built-in firepit. They also wanted access to the space above the wall so that their kids could use their trampoline and have space to play up top.

During

Our team worked hard through the hot midsummer heat to transform the space. The process involved:

  • Clearing the sod and removing debris
  • Digging through ground so hard it had to be done by machine
  • Installing a beautiful yet functional retaining wall
  • Laying down fresh sod and planting a variety of shrubs, trees, and plants
  • Building a large paver patio with built in wood burning fire pit

Challenges

During the project, we encountered a few challenges, including:

  • Rocky soil: The soil in some areas was rocky and so hard that pickaxes did nothing making it very difficult to work with
  • Unforeseen water: After this project was completed in the summer, we were called back in the winter due to essentially rivers flowing through our landscape. We had proper drainage behind the wall and under the patio, but the way the land behind their property was shaped, ground water was pouring out more than our drains could take it away. To remedy this, we added a lot more french drains throughout the landscape to catch and divert the water.

Even though the hard soil, the water, and the heat we were able to totally transform this space into a backyard oasis.

After

The result is a stunning and functional outdoor space that this family can enjoy for years to come. The new landscape features:

  • A lush green lawn that is perfect for playing and relaxing.
  • Vibrant planting beds that add color and visual interest throughout the year.
  • A variety of trees and shrubs that provide shade and privacy.
  • A paved patio area that is ideal for outdoor dining and entertaining.
  • A stone retaining wall that adds visual interest and prevents erosion.
