Water Feature Repair & Renovation
Common issues with water features arise throughout their lifecycle. Enrolling in our maintenance service helps monitor and address these problems. You can also identify and resolve some yourself or contact us for assistance. Problems often occur within the first year as soil, plants, and mulch settle (typically covered by our craftsmanship warranty within the first year of the build) and later as landscapes mature or materials degrade.
We sometimes renovate or update existing features. After an Exploratory Drain, Clean & Assess, we provide recommendations for enhancements, ranging from minor functional accessories to major filtration and aesthetic improvements that enhance your enjoyment of the feature.

Common Problems We Fix
- Plants at the edge of a feature thrive on nutrient-rich water, aggressively expanding their roots and soil and potentially causing the liner to sink and water to escape.
- Over time, materials will fail; properly constructed water features have bulkheads through the pond liner, but metal hardware can corrode, and silicone seals can separate, with roots often infiltrating these areas.
- Excess organic debris can lead to algae growth, which can be managed through better filtration, performance-enhancing accessories, and maintenance plans.
- Rock sloughing due to poor construction may require repairs or renovations. In ponds with sloped sides, using small, round rocks can exacerbate the issue, necessitating a replacement with more stable materials.
Renovating a Water Feature
Some water features require significant renovations beyond minor repairs or accessories to restore their health. These upgrades enhance filtration, structure, and overall presence in your landscape. Many new customers have ponds lacking essential mechanical filtration (such as skimmers) and biological filtration (like biofalls or wetland filters), which are crucial for maintaining water clarity. Most ponds and waterfalls can be improved to incorporate these systems.
Features with sloping sides and round rocks allow for settling due to water movement and foot traffic. In contrast, Brookside constructs water features with flat shelves and angular rocks, ensuring a stable surface for maintenance.
As your needs evolve, liner-built ponds and waterfalls can easily be expanded by adding more liner material, provided there’s sufficient water volume to accommodate the changes.
