New Home, No Problem
When you build a house, the landscape around it is usually the last thing you are thinking of. You have a totally blank canvas or maybe a basic landscape done by the builder, but you want more, you want to be the envy of the neighborhood, that’s where we come in. In this project, the homeowners wanted a landscape that was modern looking in the front yard and a little more rustic in the backyard. They had just built a beautiful home and now it was the outside’s turn. We threw the kitchen sink at this one, We installed a full irrigation system with pop up sprinklers in the front yard for the new lawn that we installed and drip irrigation for the side/backyard plants. In the front yard some very modern Castohn Olympic steppers lead you from the street to the front door and a few new landscaped beds full of new and colorful plants. In the backyard a more rustic approach. Castohn Irregular Stair Treads with pieces of cowboy coffee flagstone landings lead you from the driveway to the lower lawn. Columbia granite boulders dot the landscape providing stability for the hill and a pleasing natural aesthetic.
Before

The canvas for this project doesn’t get any more blank. Just some bare dirt, a dream, and a design. Starting with a blank canvas for us is great, it allows us to fully express our creativity and install something that is functional and fits the space without having to work around too many existing features.
During

Highlights of the project:
- Blank canvas for full creativity
- Excellent machine access
- Lots of mud
- Installing two different themes between modern frontyard and natural backyard
- Installing beautiful flag stone landings
- Full irrigation system to keep the plants and new lawn well hydrated
Challenges
During the project, we encountered a few challenges, including:
- Cold weather: This project kicked off at the end of November, which in Washington in general is cold and wet.
- Lots of mud: The PNW can get pretty wet this time of year and when you mix rain and bare dirt, you get, you guessed it, MUD and lots of it. There was a lot of daily cleaning to keep their new concrete driveway and pathway clean.
- Groundwater: This property had a lot of groundwater that ran down hill from above them and created the need for some extra drainage in both the front and backyards.
Even though the mud, the rain, and the cold we were able to totally transform this space into an eyecatching and functional landscape.
After

The result is a stunning and functional outdoor space that this family can enjoy for years to come. The new landscape features:
- Fully irrigation system on both sides of the house with the possibility of expansion in the future

- Big Castohn tread staircase with flagstone landings
